About First Day Hikes: A New Year's Day Tradition

First Day Hikes is a national initiative, promoted by America's State Parks, to get people outside on New Year's Day. Each year, state parks across the country host hikes on Jan. 1 to encourage families, friends and individuals to ring in the new year with fresh air, exercise and camaraderie. 

The program began in Massachusetts in 1992 and spread to all 50 states by 2012. Participation in First Day Hikes has become a tradition for many Americans, but newcomers are always welcome! After all, the goal is to promote healthy lifestyles for as many people as possible. In 2026, more than 70,000 people participated.

First Day Hikes in Missouri

First Day Hikes in Missouri are typically guided, but they may be self-guided, as well. Guided hikes are led by staff members or volunteers, whereas self-guided hikes feature information for hikers to read and follow on their own.

Both nationwide and within Missouri, the distance and intensity of each hike varies depending on the park and the trail, but all First Day Hikes are designed to be healthy and enjoyable.

Merchandise

We have key chains, magnets, medallions and patches for visitors who want to commemorate their First Day Hikes experience. There are two different patch designs: the standard Missouri State Parks First Day Hikes design (shown here) and a special America 250 design.

2027 Hikes

Previous Years

In 2022, hazardous weather forced the cancellation of most of our First Day Hikes. Since then, our park system has hosted at least 30 First Day Hikes each year, with an annual turnout of at least 700 people.

During our most recent round of First Day Hikes, 23 parks and five historic sites hosted a total of 34 hikes. More than 1,300 people participated; together, they hiked over 2,800 miles. That mileage is the same as the driving distance from New York City to Los Angeles!
