1/1/2024 | Washington State Park | De Soto, MO
Washington State Park will host a First Day Hike on Jan. 1, 2024, starting at the Thunderbird Lodge. This year’s theme is “Hike, Bike and Trike,” with a choice of two options. Participants can take part in an interpreter-led hike on the rugged 1,000 Steps Trail, or they can bring any human-powered wheeled equipment, such as bikes, trikes or strollers, to pedal or walk along the Big River Day-Use Area/Shelter #2 access road. The 1,000 Steps Trail option will be 1.5 miles, and the road option will be about 1 mile. Following the hike, a warming station and snacks will be provided.
1,000 Steps Trail is a natural surface trail and is open to hiking only; no equipment is allowed. The Big River Day-Use Area/Shelter #2 access road is paved and is open to all equipment. It is also a more accessible option for hiking. Both options are free and open to all ages. Participants are encouraged to dress accordingly for this outdoor winter experience.
