Birds over Baker

9/30/2023 | Sam A. Baker State Park | Patterson, MO

Discover the world of birds by learning all about our feathered friends that call our backyards home. This event will be held at the park’s day-use area on Saturday, Sept. 30, starting at 9 a.m. It is free and open to the public.

This birding festival will feature live bird presentations, guided bird watches, and activities and crafts for the whole family. Start the day off with the early bird special at Mudlick Mountain Grill; then, at 9 a.m., take a bird walk to observe and learn about the birds that are attracted to Sam A. Baker State Park. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be activities and crafts covering such topics as migration, hunting of game birds, birdhouse construction and bird behavior. Bird merchandise will be available for purchase throughout the day from the park concessionaire, GoexploreUS.

Wrap up the event with the Raptor Awareness Program, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the park amphitheater. Learn all about birds of prey during this live bird presentation from the World Bird Sanctuary of St. Louis. You'll get a close-up look at Missouri raptors such as hawks, owls and falcons as they soar right over your head during this interactive show. You don’t want to miss this display of flyers, feathers and fun!

Sam A. Baker State Park is located 4 miles north of Patterson on Highway 143 in Wayne County. For more information about this event, call the park naturalist at 573-856-4514.

Pets will not be allowed at the Raptor Awareness Program, as they can frighten the birds and force staff to keep the birds from flying.
