Weihnachtsfest

Celebrate a traditional 19th century German Christmas in historic Hermann. The Pommer-Gentner House, circa 1840, will be decorated with greenery and lit by lamplight; its historic rooms featuring Christmas trees decorated with authentic German ornaments. The music of Christmas will be featured in the piano making workshop, where a beautiful 1830s piano forte, built by Charles Pommer in Philadelphia will be on display. Sample traditional German Christmas cookies including springerle, Lebkuchen and zimmerschied. Learn how the Christmas customs of the German immigrants became American traditions celebrated yet today.  

The historic site’s Weihnachtsfest gift shop will have springerle molds and rolling pins, recipe books, imported German pop-up cards and a selection of unique books for your Christmas gift giving. 

This open house is Saturday and Sunday, the first two weekends in December. Admission is free. The Pommer Gentner House is located at 110 Market Street in Hermann. The historic site’s visitor center  is located at 107 W. Second Street. Regular guided tours will not be held so that all may enjoy the Weihnachtsfest celebration.  Click here to read the news release.
