1/1/2024 | Rock Bridge Memorial State Park | Columbia, MO
This 1.75-mile hike will be interspersed with stops to learn about the history and geology of the area. It will go up one long gradual hill on the dirt and gravel terrain of Sinkhole Trail, through the woods, and then use a boardwalk for the last quarter-mile, with some stairs involved. The level of difficulty will be moderate. Features and topics along the way will include the 19th century town of Rockbridge Mills, including its whiskey distillery and former homes; the founding of the park; Ingrum Spring; the entrances of two sinkhole pit caves; the opening of Devil's Icebox Cave; and the Rock Bridge.
We do not plan to explore the cave, as we would prefer instead to keep everyone’s feet dry. Those who wish to do so can go down the stairs and enter the opening and can probably manage to keep their feet dry if they are careful. The Rock Bridge is easier to enter and keep dry in unless rain has fallen recently.
This hike is hike is not stroller accessible and is not recommended for children 4 and under unless they are carried by an adult. We prefer that dogs do not accompany us on the hike. Participants should bring water, dress for the weather, and wear shoes that are suitable for muddy or snowy conditions. We will meet at the Devil's Icebox parking lot.
