Missouri State Parks’ short film “The Battle of Island Mound” tells the story of the first time that Black American troops were engaged in Civil War combat as Union Soldiers. The film is presented as a first-person historical account by former slave George Washington, telling a young man about the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry. The film ends with interviews of the decedents of those soldiers that fought at Battle of Island Mound with the 1st Kansas. Come learn about a piece of American history that happened just 70 miles south of Kansas City near Butler, Missouri.
