Dr. Robert Sadler, professor emeritus of physical science at Culver-Stockton College, will give a multimedia talk about the eight planets in our solar system and some of their more interesting moons. Topics will include the interiors of the planets, their atmospheres, their histories, the spacecraft that have visited them, and many other fascinating properties of these objects (for example, a day on Venus is 243 Earth days long; the polar caps on Mars contain CO2 ice; a giant storm in Jupiter’s atmosphere has been raging for at least 300 years; it rains liquid methane on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan; and the biggest volcano in the solar system is on Mars).
He will also discuss planetary orbits and the best ways to view the planets with telescopes, binoculars and the naked eye. Weather permitting, attendees will have an opportunity to view Saturn and its rings and, possibly, Jupiter and four of its moons through a small telescope. Dr. Sadler will also suggest some websites, free computer software and phone apps that will allow participants to investigate planetary bodies on their own.
This event will take place at Shelter #2, located on the east side of Agate Lake.
