"Back in Time, Forgotten Skills: Fire Making" is part of a new series of educational workshops that allows visitors to experience some of the "forgotten" or "lost" skills of old times.
Everyone says fire is easy to build, but few have tried it using alternative methods. This workshop will educate visitors on the art of creating fire using such methods. Unfortunately, very few people truly understand and appreciate what it means to create fire out in the woods with their own hands. Obtaining this skill takes much patience and respect, yet it is fairly straightforward to learn. We will focus on several different building blocks of fire-building and will attempt to build "one-match" and leave-no-trace fires. We will explore various types of fire starters, from the more modern tools, such as ferro rods and matches, to the old methods of "flint and steel." Then, we will turn to the primitive method of "rubbing sticks together" and turning friction into flame. Learn the ancient friction fire method of the bow drill, which was used by humans for tens of thousands of years.
Due to the nature of the skills to be demonstrated, the workshop is limited to no more than 10 participants, with the option for a waiting list and potentially other scheduled workshops.
