Victorian Mourning Practices

11/9/2019 | Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site | New Madrid, MO

The public is invited to experience Victorian mourning practices at Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site. The formal parlors with curtains drawn and black fabric covering mirrors will be astonishing to see. Postmortem photographs and clothing worn while in mourning will be on display, adding to the somber atmosphere.

A free program explaining these practices will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. The house will be in mourning throughout November during normal tour hours.
