In celebration of Missouri Archaeology Month, we ask you to join us each Saturday in September for a variety of programs and demonstrations as we celebrate all things archaeology here at Mastodon State Historic Site. All events are free and open to the public and will be held near the museum.
Sept. 7, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. – Staff will give atlatl demonstrations and allow everyone a chance to throw an atlatl!
Sept. 14, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. – Flint knappers will demonstrate various techniques in making stone tools. There will also be demonstrations on tanning and exhibits on other fur-bearing animals.
Sept 21, 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. – Admission to the museum will be free today. The Three Rivers Chapter of the Missouri Archaeological Society will be presenting crafts and archaeological displays and discussing artifact identification. A public meeting for Mastodon, Sandy Creek Covered Bridge and Gov. Daniel Dunklin’s Grave state historic sites will be held at 2 p.m. in the museum auditorium.
Sept. 28, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. – Join us for a guided hike to the Kimmswick Bone Bed. It is a half-mile hike to the bone bed and back on Wildflower Trail. The trail has approximately 130 steps.
