Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Activities:

Track 1: All activities are scheduled for 90 minutes

  • Archery/Atlatl (Low*)
This program will teach the basics of both archery and atlatl. Come and learn about the historical significance of atlatls, bows and arrows, and shooting techniques. After the instruction portion, participants will put their new skills to use with hands-on practice, using archery equipment and atlatls. Participants will receive personal instruction and adequate time to practice what they learn.
  • Camping 101 (Low*)
Have you ever wanted to go camping but are unsure how to get started? This program will teach you the basics of choosing gear, building a fire, campfire cooking and more. You will get hands-on practice with skills like pitching a tent and building a fire.
  • Wild Edibles (Low*)
There is a whole buffet of tasty treats available in nature if you know where to look. Fall is a great time for wild nuts, roots and fall fruits. During this session, you will learn to identify edibles and sample some recipes. We will also discuss edibles found earlier in the season and provide participants with recipes to take home.

Track 2: All activities are scheduled to last two hours

  • Learn2 Kayak (Moderate/High*)
Learn the basics of flatwater kayaking (i.e., equipment, entry and exit, strokes, safety, water, and wind). By the end of the class you will feel more comfortable on the water, better understand the safety risks around you and will have had fun. Participants will have time to practice and explore.
  • Hiking & Backpacking (Moderate-High*)
This two-hour introductory class will give you the skills and confidence needed to get you and your family out on the trail. Participants will learn the basics of hiking and backpacking, including trip planning, gear selection, navigation, meal planning, safety and first aid, and tips for keeping it fun. After we demonstrate how to use some gear, we’ll put our newly acquired skills to the test on a short hike. The first half of the class will be accessible to all users. For the hiking portion of the class, participants will need to be able to hike a short distance over rocky and hilly terrain. Backpacks will be provided for anyone who wishes to try out hiking with a pack.
  • History of Chocolate (Low*)
The era of chocolate development during the 16th and 17th centuries can be called the chocolate revolution. By the 19th century, this secret of transforming cocoa into chocolate was not only unfolding, it was quickly becoming an obsession. Join Melissa Blank from Felix Vallé State Historic Site as she shares the history of chocolate. Learn the basic stages in chocolate making, and assist in producing some chocolate. At the end of the program, participants will truly appreciate how chocolate fits into America’s culinary history.
