Join us at the historic site on Sept. 18 to commemorate the Battle of Island Mound, the first Civil War battle where Black soldiers engaged in combat.
Planned activities include live stage performances, a living history walking loop and other Civil War-themed events. Attendees will see a presentation of the Buffalo soldiers and a first-person portrayal of Lt. Patrick Minor, an officer who successfully led a Union artillery unit during the Battle of Westport. The living history walking loop will feature a rope-making demonstration, a bison program, a Missouri German carpenter's display, and an opportunity to meet Buffalo Soldiers and Lt. Patrick Minor. Participating organizations will include the Fort Scott National Historic Site and the Bates County Museum.
