3/6/2013 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City, MO
In March, the Missouri State Museum will continue to have “Museum after Hours” on the first Wednesday of each month, when museum galleries will stay open until 9 p.m. This month, guest speaker Mike Dickey, site administrator of Arrow Rock State Historic Site, will present a program called “Vincent Marmaduke- The Confederacy's James Bond” at 7 p.m. The program will take place in the museum classroom, which is located in the History Hall (east wing).
Vincent Marmaduke was the descendent of a powerful family dynasty from Arrow Rock. His family included a major-general in the Confederacy and multiple Missouri governors. Marmaduke studied law at Yale but chose instead to become a gentleman farmer. Local history merely states that he was wronged by federal authorities in the Civil War, banished from Missouri and briefly served as a Confederate artillery officer. But who was he really? As a member of the Confederate Secret Service, he was involved in one of the most daring and desperate plots in the waning days of the Confederacy. This program will explore the largely unknown role of Vincent Marmaduke in the Civil War.
