Presentation on Slavery and Abolition on the Illinois-Missouri Border

Join us at Battle of Athens State Historic Site as C. Patrick Hotle of the Missouri Speakers Bureau presents on slavery and abolition on the Illinois-Missouri border. This presentation will take place at the shelter house and will feature a slideshow about slavery and abolitionist activity in the area prior to the Civil War.  

Patrick Hotle grew up in Washington, Iowa. He has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa, as well a Master of Philosophy and a doctorate degree from Cambridge University. He served as a history teacher in international schools in Nicaragua, Egypt, Belgium and the Netherlands. For 33 years, he was the John Sperry Jr. endowed chair of humanities and professor of history at Culver-Stockton College. He retired in 2023.

Hotle has published works on subjects ranging from 16th century Britain to modern Middle Eastern history, and he also has a longtime interest in abolitionism and the American Civil War. He is currently collaborating with Terrell Dempsey on a book for the University of Missouri Press on abolitionism on the Missouri-Illinois border.
