Did you know there are at least three types of solar eclipses? On Oct. 14, 2023, Missouri will experience what is known as an "annular eclipse." This is when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth but is too far away from Earth to completely cover the sun, creating a “ring of fire” around the moon.
You are invited to celebrate this event with us at Echo Bluff State Park by participating in eclipse-themed programs and activities. All activities will be held in the field by the campground.
Activities Schedule and Eclipse Timeline:
- All day – Moon observation journal sheets available
- All day – Telescope with sun shield set up for viewing the sun/eclipse
- 10 a.m. – UV play – Make an ultraviolet bracelet and do some experiments with the beads.
- 10:30 a.m. – Eclipse starts
- 11:56 a.m. – Eclipse peaks
- Noon – “What is an Eclipse”?
- Noon – Make your own eclipse chalk art.
- 1:26 p.m. – Eclipse ends
- 2 p.m. – Moon phases with Oreos
There will be a limited number of eclipse glasses available, but feel free to bring your own if you have them. Note: You should never look directly at the sun without eye protection designed for solar viewing. Sunglasses, even very dark ones, do not count.
