Layers of Time: Missouri Unearthed

9/7/2023 | Mastodon State Historic Site | Imperial, MO

How do archaeologists know how old something is? What do the different layers of soil tell us? And what layers of time have been unearthed in our state? Through hands-on activities, we'll learn about archaeological dating techniques such as stratigraphy, dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating. We'll also learn about the various chronological phases of Missouri archaeology.

This is a FREE interpretive program that is part of our monthlong celebration of Missouri Archaeology Month. This program is designed for families with children in grades three through five. Participants should meet at the museum entrance. Weather permitting, this activity will take place outside. In the event of inclement weather, the program will take place inside the museum auditorium.
