Archaeology Day 2022

The park staff and partners of Graham Cave State Park invite the public to join them celebration of Archaeology Day 2022 on Saturday, Sept. 17. Activities planned for the day include prehistoric and historic artifact displays, flintknapping and fire-making demonstrations, wildlife fur exhibits, atlatl (spear and dart) throwing, Dutch oven cooking, and children’s programs. The event will begin with atlatl demonstrations in the Lower Picnic Area. The atlatl is a tool designed by early American Indians for hunting prior to the invention of the bow.

Visitors of all ages are encouraged to help us celebrate Archaeology Day 2022 at Missouri’s most significant early archeological cave. On Jan. 20, 1961, Graham Cave became the first archaeological site in the United States to be designated a National Historical Landmark.

Sponsors of this event include Missouri State Parks, Graham family descendants, the Montgomery County Historical Society, the Montgomery County Retired School Personnel Association and the Missouri Atlatl Association.

The public will be encouraged to wear protective face coverings and maintain social distance according to current CDC guidelines. Preregistration is not required.
