WIN: Women in Nature

8/13/2021 to 8/14/2021 | Knob Noster State Park | Knob Noster, MO

Maximum of 30 participants

Hey, ladies! Have you ever wanted to explore the great outdoors but did not know where to begin? Come to Knob Noster State Park and experience a weekend of camping, cooking and outdoor adventure taught by all female instructors. This weekend is intended to be educational and relaxing. Whether you are new to camping or consider yourself an expert, we will help you gain a few new skills and improve your techniques in a relaxed, fun and supportive atmosphere.

ACTIVITIES:

  • Night Hike/Owl Prowl (high*)
Enjoy a guided interpretative night hike with a park naturalist at Knob Noster State Park. During the hike, you will learn about how to safely hike at night and enjoy using your senses to explore the park after dark. This hike will last roughly an hour, and we recommend you wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water.
  • Fishing Basics (moderate*)
Instruction on the basics of fishing – casting, bait, reeling and catching the fish. All equipment will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite rod, reel and tackle.
  • Beginner Birding (moderate*)
Experience the basics of birding through base ID, using binoculars and bird sounds.
  • Wild Ones (moderate*)
Explore the wilds in search of edible plants and mushrooms with experienced naturalists.
  • Kayaking (moderate/high*)
Learn the basics of flat-water kayaking (i.e., equipment, entry and exit, strokes, safety, water, and wind). By the end of the class, you will feel more comfortable on the water, better understand the safety risks around you, and will have had fun. Participants will have time to practice and explore.
  • Archery/Atlatl (moderate*)
Archery is a time-honored sport that is growing in popularity. It is not only good fun but good exercise – and now you can learn how it’s done. Have you ever heard of throwing with an atlatl? Well, participants are going to get the opportunity to learn and explore the technique behind this historic hunting weapon. This course will cover archery and atlatl safety, ethics, shooting techniques and equipment selection. Participants will receive personal instruction and adequate time to practice what they learn.

Location:

WIN will take place at Knob Noster State Park in the special-use camping area. All transportation to activities within the park will be provided.

Participants will be camping in tents at the special-use area for the weekend. Participants are welcome to bring their own outdoor gear; however, tents, tarps and sleeping pads will be provided for the weekend if needed.

*PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDE:

Please be advised that WIN is an outdoor and active weekend. Participants will be walking on tread surfaces at times that contain roots, embedded rocks and have minimal elevation change. Additionally, you will park your car away from camp activities, and it will remain parked for the event.

To help participants anticipate each course and know what physical levels to expect of each class, a physical activity rating system has been created. Listed in the class description you will find a physical level rating for each course.

  • Low: requires minimal physical skill/endurance (example: lecture-based and hands-on activities in a classroom setting).
  • Moderate: requires moderate physical skill/endurance (example: lecture-based and hands-on activities while standing and short walks).
  • High: requires high levels of skill/endurance (example: lecture-based and hands-on activities while standing, hiking, lifting and full-body movement).
