Magnificent Dogwoods: The Story of Missouri's State Tree and Tips on How to Grow a Flowering Dogwood in Your Backyard

5/12/2021 | First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site | St. Charles, MO

Join us at First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site as we welcome Danny Moncheski, forester for the Missouri Department of Conservation, and Mark Halpin, forester for Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, as they dig into the story of the state tree – the flowering dogwood – and how it has become a beloved marker of spring’s arrival in Missouri. They will share interesting history, a tall tale or two, and tips and tricks on how to grow a dogwood and other Missouri native trees, like the hawthorn, in your backyard. Believe it or not, the hawthorn is also Missouri’s state flower! The first 25 attendees at this program will be eligible to take home a flowering dogwood sapling and practice the techniques shared by these foresters.

This program is the kickoff of a special heritage series of programs to be held at First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site in recognition of Missouri's bicentennial.
