Historic House and Garden Tour

In the early 19th century, nearly every home had its own garden. Although gardening today is often considered a fun hobby or pastime, for St. Charles’ early settlers, growing a garden was a matter of survival. Join us at the historic site to discover what life was like for the people living in St. Charles around 1820. Take a tour of Missouri’s historic first state Capitol building. Learn about the struggle for statehood and about the Peck family, who lived and worked beneath the feet of our first legislators. After your tour, you can stroll through our beautiful backyard, located right on the Missouri River, and visit our heritage garden, where staff will explain the various plants we grow and their uses in the early 19th century.
