Museum After Hours: “What’s this doing there?:” Archaeological Evidence of the St. Louis Barter Economy

9/5/2018 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City, MO

September is Archaeology Month! Join Michael Meyer of the Missouri Department of Transportation as he discusses the excavation of the poteaux-en-terre house in St. Louis, built and occupied by Pierre Berger from 1766 to 1778. The cellar of this home later became a trash pit for the home and blacksmith shop of Jean-Baptiste Marli. The refuse, a mix of domestic, commercial and industrial refuse, hints at how people conducted commerce in St. Louis in the final decades of the 18th century.

The program continues the museum's ongoing series, "Museum After Hours," held the first Wednesday of each month. In addition to the program, the museum's galleries will be open until 9 p.m.

The program will be held in the Missouri State Museum's History Hall, located in the east wing of the Missouri state Capitol. After-hours access to the Capitol (after 5:30 p.m.) is through the garage on the east side of the building.
