National Bison Day

11/3/2018 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines, MO

National Bison Day is the first Saturday in November. This day is set aside to honor the bison as our National Mammal. This 1-ton beast once roamed the plains and prairies of North America 60 million strong before we nearly wiped them out. Learn how Native Americans utilized the bison, see a timeline on bison, find out about the impacts people had on them, sample some bison chili, make bison-related crafts and more.

There will also be two guided hikes this year. See the prairie in its autumnal glory. Don't forget your cameras! Be prepared for a 2-mile hike over uneven terrain.

Bringing water, snacks, a hat and sunscreen, and wearing sturdy shoes is recommended. Binoculars will be useful in looking at bison as well as other wildlife that we may see. Dress for the weather; the winds can be rather nasty. Please call 417-843-6711 to register.
