First Day Hike - Canceled

1/1/2018 | Big Sugar Creek State Park | Pineville, MO

Due to cold temperatures, this hike has been canceled.

Join us as we celebrate a new year in nature! New Year’s Day, Big Sugar Creek State Park will be hosting a 2.5-mile guided hike on the moderately-difficult Ozark Chinquapin Trail. This event offers individuals and families an opportunity to begin the New Year by rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors to exercise, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family.

Ozark Chinquapin Trail winds through Elk River Breaks Woodland Natural Area and Elk River Hills Wild Area for those who want to enjoy the beauty and solitude of the area. The trail follows a small bedrock stream, which is surrounded with steep hills on both sides. The trail then climbs into the upland woodlands and glades, with opportunities to see local plants and animals, and some wonderful views across the rugged Elk River landscape.

Dress appropriately for the weather and bring water and snacks.

Hike time: 1:30 p.m.
Meeting Location: Ozark Chinquapin Trail trailhead

This hike is part of a national First Day Hikes initiative by America's State Parks. For more information and a list of other First Day Hikes in Missouri State Parks, click here.
