9/5/2016 | Boone's Lick State Historic Site | Boonesboro, MO
Boone's Lick, the site of an early 19th century salt manufacturing industry, lies in the valley of Salt Creek in southwestern Howard County. At this location, several saline springs seep to the surface. Animals, such as deer, elk and bison, would gather at the springs and literally "lick" the ground to obtain the salt. Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, sons of famed frontiersman, Daniel Boone, began making salt here in 1805.
A variety of historic crafters will be giving demonstrations of 19th century crafts to educate the public on the life and times of pioneer settlers in the Boonslick area, such as rope making, corn shuck dolls and quilting. At this daylong event, there will be musicians playing music of the period and displays to explain the importance of salt mining in the early economy of the area. There will also be food, children's games and historical displays highlighting frontier and American Indian life.
This event is sponsored by Missouri State Parks in partnership with the Boonslick Area Tourism Council. Click here to read the news release.
