8/1/2012 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City, MO
In August, the Missouri State Museum will continue to have “Museum after Hours” on the first Wednesday of each month, when museum galleries will stay open until 9 p.m. At 7 p.m. guest speaker Mike Yeomans will present a program called “Rye Coiled Baskets.” German immigrants, who settled in early 19th century Missouri, brought a tradition of making rye coiled baskets. These baskets were utilitarian in nature and used as storage containers, for raising bread and even for bee keeping. While this craft is dying away because of modern methods, Yeomans continues to share this lost art. This program will take place in the museum classroom, which is located in the History Hall (east wing).
“Museum after Hours” allows a more relaxed time to view all of the museum exhibits, especially if you have ever wondered what it would be like to visit the museum at night, or your schedule doesn’t allow daytime outings. You will find both old favorites and new including “Civil War Missouri: A House Dividing,” an exhibit that commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Evening entry to the museum will be through the carriage entrance on the south side of the building underneath the grand staircase. Click here to read the news release.
