Battle of Island Mound Commemoration Event

Join us at the historic site on Oct. 12 to commemorate the Battle of Island Mound, the first Civil War battle in which uniformed African American soldiers engaged in combat.

Planned activities include live stage performances, a living history walking loop and other Civil War-themed events. Attendees will see a presentation of the Buffalo soldiers and a first-person portrayal of Lt. Patrick Minor, an officer who successfully led a Union artillery unit during the Battle of Westport. The living history walking loop will feature rope-making and Dutch oven demonstrations, a bison program, and an opportunity to meet the Buffalo Soldiers and Lt. Patrick Minor. There will also be representatives from the Bates County Museum.

The event is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. For more information, call the site office at 417-276-4259.

Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site is located at 4837 NW County Road 1002, Butler, MO, 8 miles southwest of Butler off Highway K in Bates County.
