CCC Company 1743 Celebration

CCC Park Bus Tour and History Display – noon and 2 p.m. at Thunderbird Lodge

Meet at Thunderbird Lodge to view a display featuring photos and artifacts highlighting the construction of the park by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1743. Take a bus tour and view the skilled stonework in the buildings and culverts. Listen as staff describe the creation of Washington State Park in the 1930s. Learn more about the only CCC company composed of people of color who worked in a Missouri state park.

Bus tours will begin at noon and 2 p.m.

Build a Barracks – 4 p.m. in the Big River Day-Use Area

If you had to build your own temporary dwelling, what would it look like? Join staff in pretending to be a member of Company 1743 and build your own barracks to work from! A variety of natural building materials will be provided.

Quarry Hike – 6 p.m. at the amphitheater

Join staff for an approximately 2-mile hike to see the quarry where many of the stones were taken for the construction of the park! Learn about quarrying methods used by the CCC, and enjoy a moderately rugged scenic hike across parts of Rockywood and Opossum Track trails.
