7/22/2023 | Cuivre River State Park | Troy, MO
Cuivre River State Park staff will unveil two new exhibits at the visitor center on Saturday, July 22. Both exhibits are focused on Black history that occurred in and around the current boundaries of the park.
The first exhibit examines the 62nd U.S. Colored Troops of the Civil War. Visitors can read about the experiences and accomplishments of the regiment’s members, and learn about the soldiers who were previously enslaved on land that is now part of the park. The second exhibit highlights the life of Black Methodist preacher and leader Louis Overton. Along with many other accomplishments, Overton, with help from some members of the USCT, established the first school for Black children in Lincoln County, as well as two Methodist churches that are still active today.
During the event, interpreters who planned and created the exhibits will be available to answer questions and talk with visitors. Interpreters will be available from 1-3 p.m., and the exhibits will be up through Oct. 31.
