Explorer Day Camp 2023: Civil War on the Border

7/14/2023 | Prairie State Park | Mindenmines, MO

Prairie State Park will host "Explorer Day Camp 2023: Civil War on the Border" on Friday, July 14. This class is designed for children 5 and up and will begin in the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center at 9 a.m.

Together we will explore how the Civil War impacted the residents of Barton County and the Osage in the Neutral Land. Participants will learn the School of the Soldier required by new inductees into the military. They will also learn about medicinal plants, herbs and other foods used by soldiers during the Civil War. Patches and certificates will be awarded at the conclusion of the event.

Participants should be prepared for a long day. The majority of the class will take place outside. Please bring lunch, snacks, bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellent and any other items your family might need throughout the day. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Due to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park, pets are not allowed on park trails, EXCEPT for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park, and this regulation protects both you and your pet. You are welcome to bring your pet to the park's campground and picnic area, but must follow Missouri State Parks' pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting people with disabilities.

This event is free; however, registration is required, and there is a limit of 35 participants. To register, call 417-843-6711.
