The Wacky World of Insects

6/23/2018 | Graham Cave State Park | Danville, MO

Insects are perhaps the most diverse group of organisms in the world. Scientists estimate there are 91,000 species in the United States alone! Join naturalist Lorie Volenberg as she shares a menagerie of wacky tactics that insects have developed to survive and ensure the success of their progeny. During the 30-minute program, you will hear about ants that farm aphids, wasps that zombify caterpillars and caterpillars that trick ants! Then Volenberg will guide you on a short, .3-mile hike along Fern Ridge Trail, where you will go on an insect safari.

The program will start at the Graham Cave Trail trailhead in the lower picnic area. Hikers are encouraged to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, and to bring a bottle of water. Insect repellent for a few pesky species of insects is strongly recommended. Click here to read the news release.
