Cuivre Christmas BIrd Count - Postponed

1/7/2017 | Cuivre River State Park | Troy, MO

This event has been postponed. More information will be available next week. If you are interested in attending this event, please contact the park at 636-528-7247 so they can get in touch with you when the event has been rescheduled.

Each year around the holiday season, tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists, go out on an annual mission - often before dawn. For more than 100 years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the holiday season.

You can be a part of this 116-year-old tradition during the Cuivre River Christmas Bird Count! Everyone from experienced ornithologists to brand new birders can join in this important Citizen-Science event. If you are new, we will pair you up with a few experienced birders and you can be a part of adding to our knowledge of the park. This is an "unofficial" Christmas Bird Count, but the park’s count has taken place for 35 years – giving the park some very important long-term data.  Each year, we see more than 40 species, including bald eagles!

Bring your own binoculars or spotting scope on count day. The park has a limited number of bird identification books and binoculars that can be loaned out...and be sure to dress warm for the weather! Some counting can be done from a vehicle, but there will be some walking too. Meet at the visitor center, and teams will be given an area of the park to record their birds.
