This rating system is designed as a tool to help you locate your preferred type of trail. In addition, trail users are encouraged to read the full trail description and note any advisories in place. If you have concerns or questions, seek input from park staff before selecting a trail.
Ratings:
Easy:
- Requires little skill and has little physical challenge.
- Tread is smooth, level and wide. Trees, limbs and other vegetation are clear above and to each side of the trail to permit easy passage.
- Elevation gain or loss is minimal.
- Streams are most often crossed with bridges.
Moderate:
- Requires a modest skill level and provides a reasonable physical challenge.
- Tread surface contains roots and embedded rocks. Trees, limbs, and other vegetation may overhang or encroach on sides of trail.
- Elevation gain or loss is moderate.
- Streams are most often crossed without bridges.
Rugged:
- Requires a high degree of skill and provides a definite physical challenge.
- Tread is seldom graded, except on steep side slopes for safety and prevention of soil erosion. Trees, limbs, and other vegetation may overhang or encroach on sides of trail.
- Elevation gain or loss is usually significant.
- Streams are crossed without bridges and are sometimes difficult.
