Moses Dickson and the African American Fight for Equality in Gilded Age Missouri

6/14/2025 | Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site | Lawson, MO

In this program, presenter Jeffery Smith, Ph.D., will use the history of Father Dickson Cemetery to discuss the relationship between prominent African American figure Moses Dickson (1824-1901) and Black cemeteries in the state.

Dickson was among the best-known African Americans in Missouri in the second half of the 19th century. He was an abolitionist and a minister, and he founded one of the largest African American service organizations in the South after the Civil War. He was a prominent member of the Missouri Republican Party and published articles and delivered speeches on an array of topics. In short, he was among the most compelling characters in Missouri in his lifetime.

This presentation will take place in the AV room of the historic site's visitor center. It is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. For more information, call the site at 816-580-3387.
