What role did early Missourians play in the Cherokee removal story? Is it a derisive story of racism, indifference and greed? With funding from the Missouri Humanities Council and the Trail of Tears Association, a great deal of new information has been uncovered, and a new story has developed. It is a story of care and effort extended by many of the earliest Missouri settlers and farmers to aid the Cherokees on their trek across frontier Missouri. Based on newly discovered documents from almost 200-year-old contemporaneous government records, and the newest GIS techniques, this newly discovered information comes to life.
Join us inside the Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site visitor center for a presentation about these new findings. This presentation is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. For more information, call the site office at 816-580-3387.
This event is sponsored by the Missouri Speakers Bureau. The Missouri Speakers Bureau is jointly organized and managed by Missouri Humanities and the State Historical Society of Missouri.
