Landing After Hours: History and Art: George Caleb Bingham and “Order No. 11”

1/4/2023 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City, MO

The American Civil War has long been understood as a conflict between the North and South, leaving out the Midwest. Perhaps no Midwesterner has suffered more from this lack of understanding than painter George Caleb Bingham. Through an analysis of Bingham’s controversial 1868 painting “Order No. 11,” this talk untangles the complicated legacy of the Civil War in the Midwest. Presenter Amy Laurel Fluker is a historian, author and proud central Missourian whose research focuses on history, memory and identity in the Midwest.

The Missouri State Museum's "Landing After Hours" program is held the first Wednesday of each month at Jefferson Landing State Historic Site, located at 100 Jefferson St. The Lohman Museum will be open from 6-7 p.m., and the program will start at 7 p.m. Convenient parking is available in the lot next to the Lohman Building.

In addition to being held in person, this program will also be livestreamed on the Missouri State Museum's Facebook page.
