This month, our art show will feature original works of art from area students, including one very special piece from Mineral Area College student-artist Yancy McCarron. A special “meet the artist” reception will be held at the museum on Saturday, April 11 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Light snacks will be available, and Yancy will be on hand to visit with the public about her work. Visitors will be able to meet our artist and discuss her work.
Yancy has produced a unique work of art specifically for our historic site. In it, she gives her impression of the Battle of Pilot Knob from the perspective of a person who was in the battle. Her painting – along with several pieces from some of our cooperating schools – will be on display for the month of April 2020. We hope the fourth graders and high school students who are in this show will be inspired by Yancy and her pursuit of art as a career. Many of the children in the show with Yancy will be coming to the museum in April for their annual spring fieldtrips and will get to see their work on display alongside Yancy's.
Our feature artist Yancy McCarron is already an accomplished Artist already even at her young age, and we are honored to have her work, focused on our battle, on display here at the museum.
About the Artist
As far as I can remember, I have always been interested in art in some shape or form. In grade school, I already found art interesting; I thought the process of creating something was fun. By my freshmen year in high school, art was available as a full-year course of study. I put so much energy into each assignment, and it paid off in the end. High school art established a level of discipline and elevated my skills to take me further in college. I entered several art shows, including the annual MAC K-12 Student Art Show and the St. Louis Holocaust Museum Art and Writing Contest. I earned numerous honors and prizes at the K-12 Student Art Show each year and earned second place in the Holocaust contest.
As I stated previously, I enjoy creating and learning about new media and methods. I have experience with charcoal, oil paint, embroidery, printmaking and even painting on screws. I create art whenever a thought comes to me or I see a picture I think would be interesting to create. My subject matter is often people, because the complexity of every individual offers new possibilities to experiment with.
I am scheduled to graduate in May 2020 as a fine arts major with my associate degree from Mineral Area College. I have been accepted to St. Louis University’s art history program, where I will begin working towards my bachelor’s in art history this fall.
