Canceled: First Saturday Lecture: Ulysses S. Grant

5/2/2020 | Arrow Rock State Historic Site | Arrow Rock, MO

This event has been canceled.

Dr. E.C. “Curt” Fields will be presenting a first-person portrayal of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in this living history lecture at the historic site's visitor center auditorium. Although born in Ohio, Grant had strong ties to Missouri, beginning in 1843. Grant’s first combat command was at the Battle of Belmont, Missouri on Nov. 6, 1861. The battle was inconclusive, but Grant’s aggressiveness and willingness to fight while other generals were overly cautious brought him to President Lincoln’s attention. Lincoln appointed Grant commander of all Union armies in March 1864.

A lifelong student of the American Civil War, Dr. Fields’ interest in portraying Gen. U.S. Grant was driven by his study of the war and subsequent respect and admiration for Grant. Fields is the same height and body type as Grant and therefore presents a convincing, realistic image of the general. He has researched and read extensively about Grant in order to deliver an accurate persona of the man, speaking during presentations in first person, quoting from Grant’s memoirs, articles and letters he wrote, or statements he made in interviews.

This presentation is free and open to the public.
