Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site is proud to host a very special original art show in November of 2019. For the entire month of November, we will have on display a collection of original oil paintings depicting the beauty and spender of Elephant Rocks State Park. The show will feature the rocks from various viewpoints and different times of the year.
This exhibit will be held inside the historic site museum from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week. It will kick off with a reception on Saturday, Nov. 2.
“Elephant Rocks” by Garry McMichael
In the past year, artist Garry McMichael has created almost 30 oil and acrylic paintings of Elephant Rocks ranging in size from 6 by 8 inches to 2 by 4 feet. The following paragraph from McMichael’s website provides more information about these paintings:
“Garry McMichael’s newest body of work is Elephant Rocks. It is a series of paintings of a unique granite geological formation located in the St. Francis Mountains about an hour and a half drive south of St Louis, Missouri. There is nothing quite like this rock-strewn landscape anywhere else in Missouri or Mid-America. Giant boulders of pink granite rocks appear all over the landscape and in the Ozark hardwood forest. Throughout the centuries, green and gray lichens and mosses have only added to their shape, texture and beauty. Elephant Rocks is one of Middle-America’s strongest energy vortexes. Garry has taken on the challenge of capturing their beauty throughout the seasons and under unique weather and lighting conditions …”
McMichael suggests the best time to enjoy Elephant Rocks is late in the evening, the last hour before sunset. You will have the big rocks to yourself, and it’s a great place to meditate, he says.
