25th Annual Halloween Happenings

Come out to Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park for the 25th Annual Halloween Happenings, where you will get to enjoy numerous Halloween-themed activities and have the chance to win a prize in various contests. All activities will take place in the park campground.

Activities Schedule
  • 7 a.m. - 6:45 p.m. – The Great Pumpkin Hunt
    Mini pumpkins will be hidden throughout the campground. The bottoms of pumpkins will be marked with a letter indicating a prize. Bring your pumpkins to the amphitheater at 7 p.m. to collect your prize!
  • 5 p.m. – Campsite decorating contest
    Judges will begin touring the campground at 5 p.m., looking at all of the spooky Halloween decorations. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded.
  • 5 p.m. – Pumpkin carving contest
    Judges will begin touring the campground at 5 p.m., looking at all of the carved pumpkins on display. Children (age 16 and younger) should place their pumpkins at the edge of their campsite, on the left – based on looking at your campsite. Adults (age 17 and up) should place their pumpkins at the edge of their campsite, on the right. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded for each age group.
  • 5:15 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. – Trick-or-treating
    Our campers will host trick-or-treating fun for the kids. Participating campers should set up at the edge of their campsite with their treats.
  • 7:30 p.m. – Costume contest judging  – Campground amphitheater
    Children and adults are encouraged to dress up! First, second and third place prizes for best costume will be awarded for ages 16 and younger and ages 17 and older.
  • 7:30 p.m. – Movie: "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" – Campground amphitheater
    "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is a G-rated 1996 American comedy-drama film starring Don Knotts as Luther Heggs, a newspaper typesetter who spends a night in a haunted house, which is located in the fictitious community of Rachel, Kansas.
