11/9/2019 | First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site | St. Charles, MO
First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site will offer a stool caning class on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the historic site.
Cane work is a form of basketry that has been used in furniture for thousands of years. It has been traced back to Ancient China, and archaeologists have discovered caned chairs in Egyptian tombs dating to 1300 B.C. Caned bottom chairs were popular in Europe during the 17th and early 18th centuries. In America, many people made their own chairs with solid wood seats or seats from rush or cattails.
In this class, participants will learn about the history behind caning and the techniques needed to create a stool of their own to take home. The class costs $70 and includes lunch. All materials will be supplied. Attendees may bring snacks and a drink if they wish. Registration is required, and class size is limited. For more information, please call the historic site at 636-940-3322.
