Celebrate International Vulture Awareness Day and learn how vultures are critical to a healthy environment during this year’s Mudlick Mountain Tower Tours event. The event will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., with registration for van tours beginning at 9:30 a.m.
International Vulture Awareness Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in September each year and commemorates vulture conservation and awareness throughout the world. Vultures are known as "nature's garbage collectors" because they help clean up carcasses of dead animals and prevent the spread of disease. Turkey vultures are among the most common large carnivorous birds in North America. However, they can easily be poisoned lead and other toxins in their food. Populations of other vulture species are under pressure, and some are facing extinction.
The fire tower on top of Mudlick Mountain is a popular perch for turkey vultures and black vultures. A guided van ride to the fire tower will allow you to learn more about these raptors and the park. From the fire tower, you will have the choice of taking the van on the return trip or hiking down the mountain and discovering the unique geology of the St. Francois Mountains. Along the way, you will pass waterfalls and get to relax at a historic CCC-built shelter featuring a breathtaking overlook of Big Creek.
Additional activities for the day will include geocaching opportunities and vulture awareness activities. The trail is rugged and steep in some places, so wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of snacks and water. Please bring a personal GPS unit or equivalent device for participation in the geocaching challenge. All activities will begin at the visitor center.
