Intro to Hiking and Backpacking

9/7/2019 | Cuivre River State Park | Troy, MO

This 2-hour introductory class will give you the skills and confidence needed to get you and your family out on the trail. Participants will learn the basics of hiking and backpacking, including trip planning, gear selection, navigation, meal planning, safety and first aid, and tips for keeping it fun. After we demonstrate how to use some gear, we’ll put our newly acquired skills to the test and hike 2 miles on the beautiful Cuivre River Trail North Loop. We’ll stop at a backpack camp and practice setting up camp. Then we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch before heading back to the trailhead.

The first half of the class will be held at the Big Sugar Creek trailhead and is accessible to all user groups. For the hiking portion of the class, participants will need to be able to hike a total of 2 miles over rocky and hilly terrain. This is a family-friendly class, and children are welcome. Backpacks will be provided for anyone who wishes to try out hiking with a pack. Space is limited, and registration is required. To register, call the park office at 636-528-7247.
