First Saturday Lecutre: "Body Art Around the World"

9/7/2019 | Arrow Rock State Historic Site | Arrow Rock, MO

All cultures practice body modification in one form or another, whether it is body painting, piercing, tattooing, scarring or reshaping. These practices can serve a variety of functions, such as indicating social position, clan membership or marital status; identifying with a particular family, ethnic group or gender; performing a rite of passage; warding off evil spirits; invoking good spirits; and sending messages.

In this lecture, Dr. Carol Diaz-Granados will explore the fascinating topic of body art and body modification in several world cultures, including our own. Dr. Diaz-Granados is a research associate in the Department of Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. She is the author of several books on anthropology, including “The Petroglyphs and Pictographs of Missouri,” “Drawing with Great Needles: Ancient Tattoo Traditions of North America” and “Picture Cave: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Mississippian Cosmos.” She is the editor of “Transforming the Landscape: Rock Art and the Mississippian Cosmos.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.
