City Nature Challenge Nightime Insect Survey

4/28/2018 | Cuivre River State Park | Troy, MO

Cuivre River State Park will be joining the 2018 St. Louis City Nature Challenge. The City Nature Challenge is a worldwide event sponsored by the citizen science team at iNaturalist. This is an international competition to document plant and animal life in your area. This year, more than 60 different metropolitan regions around the world will compete between April 27 and April 30, 2018. If you live in the St. Louis region (and the counties surrounding in the bi-state area) you can participate in scheduled events or from your own backyard. To participate, download the free iNaturalist app for your phone.

The park will host a daytime and nighttime event during the challenge. The evening event will be a nocturnal insect survey in the campground. Park staff and volunteer researchers will set up light stations that will attract moths, beetles, mayflies and other nocturnal insects. Visitors can join the naturalist and use the iNaturalist app to record what they discover during the survey. Visitors should meet at the amphitheater in the campground for a short program to introduce you to the different insects you might encounter during the event. Join us to become citizen scientists and help us win the City Nature Challenge!

Visitors should meet at the amphitheater, located in the campground across from the playground. Please download the iNautralist app before you arrive, and have your phone battery fully charged. Visitors may come and go as they please. The researchers will be in the park late or until it is too chilly for the insects. As always, this program is free and open to the public. This program will be held weather permitting; check the park's Facebook page for updates or contact the park office at 636-528-7247.
