First Saturday Lecture: Missouri's Alexander the Great: Alexander William Doniphan

2/3/2018 | Arrow Rock State Historic Site | Arrow Rock, MO

During the 1838 Mormon War, Alexander W. Doniphan refused an order from General Samuel Lucas to execute Mormon founder Joseph Smith and his followers. He was also hailed as a hero of the Mexican War, leading his troops on one of the longest and most successful marches in American military history. Doniphan returned to Missouri and practiced law, becoming a prosperous businessman and helping to establish William Jewell College in Liberty. He turned down opportunities to run for Congress and the governorship and refused to take sides in the Civil War.

The presenter, Larry Brown, Ph.D., is a retired assistant professor of human geography at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He is a co-founder and current co-president of the Mid-Missouri Organization for Storytelling. The lecture is free and open to the public.
