Explore the life and times of Missouri's earliest U.S. Senators with local historian Henry Gensky. Special attention will be given to Thomas Hart Benton, our state's U.S. Senator from 1821 to 1851, and his family. Benton, a proponent of western expansion, played a critical role in setting boundaries on the Oregon Territory. He also wrote the first Homestead Act, which gave land grants to people willing to settle and work the soil.
The program will be held in the Missouri State Museum's History Hall, located in the east wing of the Missouri State Capitol. After-hours access to the Capitol (after 5:30 p.m.) is through the garage on the east side of the building.
The program continues the museum's ongoing series, "Museum After Hours," held the first Wednesday of each month. In addition to the program, the museum's galleries will be open until 9 p.m.
