Canceled: First Day Hike - Earthworks Trail

1/1/2018 | Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park | Miami, MO

This hike has been canceled due to the predicted low temperatures.

We will begin our New Year’s journey at the base of the Van Meter Pinnacles at the Earthworks Trail trailhead. The hike will lead through the forest of the Oumessourit Natural Area up to the top of Sentinel Ridge, where there is a view of the marsh and Missouri River bottomlands. Following this ridge, we will come to the 400-year-old Oneota earthen creation known as the "Old Fort." The adventure continues as we walk to the highest point in Saline County and learn about the prehistoric groups that once called the land of Missouri home.

This trail is approximately 2 miles long and will take about 1.5 hours. The trail is fairly steep as we hike from the base of the hills to the top of Sentinel ridge, but afterward is quite moderate. Strollers are not recommended. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.

Hike time: 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Meeting Location: Earthworks Trail trailhead near Shelter 1

This hike is part of a national First Day Hikes initiative by America's State Parks. For more information and a list of other First Day Hikes in Missouri State Parks, click here.
