The historic site and the Monroe County Historical Society will be hosting the 2018 Salt River Quilt & Craft Show inside the Mark Twain Memorial Shrine. Quilts will wind their way through the museum's two galleries, past the shrine's newly-renovated exhibits.
The concurrent craft show will be held in Mark Twain State Park's Buzzard's Roost Picnic Area a mile south of the shrine. There, food, craft and quilt-related vendors will be set up inside Huckleberry Hall during the same days and hours as the quilt show. If visitors choose, they can enjoy their lunch under the trees on the lovely park grounds outside the hall. Attend both the quilt and craft show for the chance to win a lovely prize.
This year's quilt show theme is "Reach for the Stars," as Mark Twain State Park is becoming known as a skywatcher's destination. A quilt challenge is being issued for star quilts (in any size), pieced, appliqued or embroidered. Other quilt categories will include lakes and waterways of Missouri, children's quilts, other quilted items (non-bed quilt), and miscellaneous quilts. The quilts will be judged in each category and ribbons and prizes awarded.
Presentations will be offered daily including a talk and trunk show on the quilts of the Great Depression and a program on the history of Union Covered Bridge. Noted quilt appraiser Hallye Bone will be available again this year for quilt appraisals or consultations. Admission to see the quilt and craft shows and the presentations is free, but donations will be accepted.
