Canceled: First Day Hikes

This hike has been canceled.

Start the new year out right with a guided First Day Hike! Following is detailed information regarding each hike. Hot cocoa will be served to all hike participants.

Due to predicted cold temperatures, the hikes have been modified as noted in bold:

Hike #1 - Tall Oaks Trail

Modified - 0.5-mile hike or 0.8-mile hike - We will not hike the entire trail.

  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Meeting place: Shelter 3 parking lot
  • Degree of difficulty: moderate
  • Length of hike: 3.2 miles or 0.5 mile (Visitors may choose to take a road back to the parking lot instead of traversing the entire trail.)
  • While hiking visitors will travel through a diversity of habitats and have opportunities to see wildlife including deer and turkey.
Hike #2 – South Loop of the Thompson River Trail

This hike has been canceled.

  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Meeting place: Shelter 3 parking lot
  • Degree of difficulty: strenuous
  • Length of hike: 7 miles
  • This hike will allow visitors to travel a short section of the Tall Oaks Trail before hiking all of the South Loop of the Thompson River Trail.
Hike #3 - North Loop of the Thompson River Trail

Modified: 2 miles - We will not hike the entire trail.

  • Time: 1 p.m.
  • Meeting place: equestrian parking lot (Travel west from the main park entrance on Highway 146 1. 3 miles. Turn right (north) on Northwest 52nd Avenue. Travel 2.1 miles and turn right (east) onto Dove Lane. Dove Lane ends at the equestrian parking lot after 0.4 mile.)
  • Degree of difficulty: Moderate
  • Length of hike: 3.8 miles or 2 miles (Visitors may choose to take a service road back to the parking lot instead of traversing the entire trail.)
  • While hiking visitors will travel through a diversity of habitats and have opportunities to see wildlife including deer and turkey. Visitors will also hike past the Thompson Family Cemetery, the Thompson House (owned by the Friends of the Thompson House) and along the banks of the Thompson River.
Information for all three hikes:
  • Restrictions: Pets must be leashed. Strollers will not be able to traverse the entirety of any of the trails.
