Archaeology Day

9/9/2017 | Graham Cave State Park | Danville, MO

Visitors of all ages are encouraged to help us celebrate Archaeology Day 2017 at Missouri’s most significant early archeological cave. The cave was the first archaeological site in the United States to be designated a National Historical Landmark on Jan. 20, 1961.

Activities planned for the day include prehistoric artifact displays, flintknapping demonstrations, deer bone fish hook demonstrations, mammal exhibits, atlatl (spear and dart) throwing, storytelling, Dutch oven cooking, nature hikes and tours, and children’s events.

The main events begin at 10 a.m. with an open informational meeting and demonstrations and teaching of the use of the atlatl from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The atlatl is a tool designed by the early Native American Indians for hunting prior to the invention of the bow.

The event will be held at the lower picnic area and in front of Graham Cave. Preregistration is not required. For more information, telephone the park office at 573-546-3476.

Sponsors include Missouri State Parks, Graham Family Descendants, the Montgomery County Historical Society, the Montgomery County Retired School Personnel Association, the University of Missouri: Department of Anthropology, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Missouri Atlatl Association.
